A doctor just wrote me a note after a trial. He said: "The case did show a need to improve on certain aspects of the care I render and those have long been corrected."
This practice change makes a difference because patients who go to this doctor now; they will not face the danger of his care since his deficiencies in this aspect of his care have been changed.
The civil justice system is more than just about the money. Sometimes we can change conduct for the better.
This is just one example of a sucessful behavior modification. Other instances can be inferred from negligent driving cases. If the wrongdoer has to pay a significant sum of money for the harm caused, that cost should prevent the driver from engaging in that conduct in the future due to the cost of the bahavior.
